What is 2FA or Two-Factor Authentication?
2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) adds an extra layer of security to your online account. Besides your password, it provides a time-sensitive code generated by an authenticator app on your phone or computer to provide during the login process.
Choosing an authenticator app.
There are many applications that support 2FA, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy, to name a few. These can all be downloaded for free via the Apple app store or the Google Play store.
Setting up 2FA on your phone.
For our example, we will demonstrate how to use Google Authenticator. Once you have the app installed, click the + button in the bottom right-hand corner. ( If required ) enable access to the camera and click Scan the QR code.
- QR Code: A square, patterned image you scan with your phone.
- Setup Key: A series of letters and numbers.
Once the app has registered the QR code or you have manually entered the code, it will generate a 6-digit code that will change every 30 seconds. Enter the code into the one-time code field and press continue.
The QR code will look something like this.
